Where this shows up in the Captain’s Method

Meyer's scales give the Captain's Method a finer instrument than any single type label. The Evaluating scale shapes Punctuation, the one-on-one where a hard truth has to land in a form the member can hear. The Persuading scale tests the Writing chapter's use of Minto's Pyramid Principle, since answer first persuades applications-first readers and can lose principles-first ones. The Disagreeing scale prepares a cohort for the Debate Stage, where some members hear open challenge as respect and others hear it as attack.

  • Capacity

Her eight scales give a leader a fine-grained tool for adjusting feedback, persuasion and disagreement to the person in front of them.

  • Environment

She shows how a team's mix of cultures sets its unwritten rules for trust, decisions and conflict.

  • Systems

Her deciding and scheduling scales show why the same plan runs differently in different teams.

Erin Meyer was born in Minnesota in 1971 and taught English in Botswana with the Peace Corps. She is a professor at INSEAD, the business school near Paris, where she directs the Leading Across Borders and Cultures program. She wrote The Culture Map (2014) and co-wrote No Rules Rules (2020) with Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings, a New York Times bestseller. Thinkers50 has named her among the world's most influential business thinkers.
