THE CAPTAIN'S METHOD™
Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions.

Coaching, mentoring, workshops, and everything in between: answered plainly.

Understanding Our Approach
What's the difference between coaching and mentoring?

Coaching helps you think: it builds your own judgment through structured questions and reflection. Mentoring helps you see: it's guidance from someone who has already solved the specific problem in front of you. We use both, depending on what you need.

What is a Certified Professional Coach?

A Certified Professional Coach has completed formal training in coaching methodology and holds credentials through a recognized coaching body. Our coaching team is credentialed, and our own Certified Practitioner and Certified Trainer tracks extend that standard to people we authorize to deliver our work.

How does executive coaching work?

Executive coaching is an ongoing 1:1 relationship, usually weekly or biweekly, built around a specific gap between where you are and where your role requires you to be. Sessions are structured around situations you're facing, not generic curriculum.

What's the difference between leadership mentoring and executive mentoring?

Leadership mentoring is broader: it's for anyone developing as a leader, at any level. Executive mentoring is scoped specifically to people in senior roles managing organizational complexity, succession pressure, or board-level dynamics.

How is your approach different from typical leadership training?

Most leadership training teaches information. We build recognition and judgment: the ability to see what's happening in a situation and respond well, under real pressure, not just in a workshop room.

Who It's For
Who is The Captain's Method™ designed for?

Emerging leaders, founders, business owners, creative professionals, and people navigating a major career or life transition. If you're capable but the recognition and judgment haven't caught up to the responsibility yet, this is built for that gap.

I'm a founder: is this different from coaching built for corporate leaders?

Yes. Founders carry different pressure: no clear org chart telling you what's next, and the stakes are personal as well as professional. Our Capacity Blueprint™ assessment and related programs are built around that specific reality, not repurposed corporate curriculum.

Do you work with people going through a career transition?

Yes. This is one of the most common reasons people start with us. Our Your Next Chapter™ assessment exists specifically for people trying to find direction, not just execute on a plan they already have.

What about succession planning?

Succession planning is preparing the next generation of leadership to take over, not just naming a successor, but building their judgment and readiness. We help through mentoring, our Capacity Blueprint™ work, and our Certified Trainer track for people taking on more responsibility.

Programs & Curriculum
What does an emerging leader development program include?

Ours includes a diagnostic assessment (the Growth Navigator™), a recommended path (coaching, workshops, or the full 4-month intensive), and a structured framework (The Captain's Method™) for building judgment under pressure, not just information.

What happens in one of your leadership workshops?

Workshops are short, focused sessions built around one specific skill, not a lecture. Expect scenarios, structured practice, and a clear takeaway you can use immediately, not a binder you file away.

What does a typical week look like in the 4-month intensive?

Each week combines a live workshop, coaching or mentoring, field assignments, reading, journaling, and weekly accountability. The work is applied in real time to your life, leadership, and business.

What is adventure-based leadership learning?

It's leadership development built around real experience and designed productive failure, not passive instruction: the idea that judgment is built by navigating real difficulty, with structured reflection built in, not by sitting through a workshop about it.

Can I get certified to deliver your programs myself?

Yes, through our Navigational Leadership Accreditation™. Certified Practitioners can administer our assessments with their own clients; Certified Trainers are authorized to deliver the full Captain's Method™. Details are on our Certification page.

Pricing & Investment
How much does coaching or the intensive cost?

Pricing varies by program and is shown with numbers on our Products page, adjusted based on your role and situation. Creative FIT™ has a free option to start, plus a deeper $39 version; the full 4-month intensive is a significant investment reflecting the scope of what's included.

Is there a free or low-cost way to start?

Yes. The Growth Navigator™ assessments (Your Next Chapter™, Capacity Blueprint™, Legacy Impact™) are free, and Creative FIT™ has both a free option and a deeper $39 version. An online course is coming soon as another low-cost entry point. All of these give you a personalized starting point before any bigger commitment.

Do you offer scholarships?

Yes. We set aside seats for people who are the right fit but for whom cost is the barrier. Our Scholarship Assessment gives you an honest range (Full, Partial, or Investment) with final decisions made through interviews, assignments, and reference checks. Details are on our Scholarships page.

Logistics & Pacing
Is this virtual, in-person, or both?

Coaching and mentoring run virtually so scheduling works around your life. Workshops and the 4-month intensive combine virtual sessions with in-person immersion: the real-world, adventure-based components need to happen in person.

How much time do I need to commit each week?

1:1 coaching is typically one session a week plus reflection between sessions, a few hours total. The 4-month intensive is a bigger commitment: workshops two to three times a week alongside coaching and assignments. Your assessment sizes this to your actual bandwidth.

How long does a coaching engagement typically last?

Our standard 1:1 coaching program runs six months. Some people continue longer once momentum builds; others complete a focused engagement and move on. We build the plan around your actual gap, not a fixed template.

Do I need any experience or background to start?

No specific background is required. What matters more is genuine readiness to do the work: our assessments are built to surface that, not to screen for credentials.

What is the Growth Navigator™ assessment?

It's a short, free diagnostic (three versions depending on your situation) that identifies your specific gap and recommends the right next step, with a personalized price and time-commitment estimate, not a generic sales pitch.

Results & What Happens Next
What results can I expect, and how do you measure them?

Results vary by person and program, but the throughline is better judgment under pressure: decisions, conversations, and follow-through that hold up when it counts. We don't promise a fixed outcome; we build toward the specific, personal gap identified in your assessment.

Is there a guarantee?

We don't offer a money-back guarantee, since development depends on your effort as much as ours. What we do guarantee is a program built around your actual, diagnosed gap, not a generic curriculum, delivered by expert trainers, coaches, and subject matter experts, with guest speakers and content and curriculum we believe is unrivaled. See our Disclaimer for full detail.

What happens after the program ends: is there ongoing support?

Yes. Alumni have access to continued education, training opportunities, and community programs built for practice and gaining experience hours, and some go on to our Certification track to deliver the work themselves. Alumni are part of the family, and we help where and how we can. The relationship doesn't have to end when the formal program does.

How do I know which program is right for me?

Start with a Growth Navigator™ assessment: it's free, takes a few minutes, and gives you a specific recommendation based on your actual answers, not a generic list of options.
