Equanimity.
A way of being already resolved before a difficult moment arrives — not a pause chosen inside the moment. Trained fragility doesn't reduce a person's capacity to think or act well. It redirects the same full capacity onto self-preoccupation, instead of the actual problem.
This is the generator that decides whether a recognition ever survives contact with a person's own self-interest. Someone can see the truth clearly and still not act on it — Equanimity is what that gap is made of, and it is the single most independently re-validated construct anywhere in the method. It is scored as its own chapter, and re-scored, unmodified, inside three other capability assessments.
Equanimity has six principles. This page demonstrates one of them — Values — completely, rather than all six partially. The other five (Faults, Options, Use of Knowledge, Effort, Emotion) are named scope, not yet built to this depth.
“Daddy, maybe they have pies in the back and they need to go slower?”
A value doesn't just get exaggerated in the moment — it gets recruited after the fact. Whichever value best justifies a reaction already underway suddenly feels urgent, even though it wasn't driving anything a minute earlier.
A driver gets cut off in traffic and starts complaining loudly, certain the point is safety or courtesy or respect — whichever value is closest at hand to explain a reaction that had already started. His daughter's question didn't argue with the value. It just supplied a different, plausible story, and the anger had nowhere left to stand.
The Inner Citadel.A person retains one thing no external circumstance can touch: what they choose to make of what happens to them. Grounded in Epictetus's discipline of assent — impressions arrive automatically, but assent to the judgment riding on them does not. Disturbance comes from the added judgment, not the event itself.

The Values principle is scored 0–10 in the Equanimity self-assessment:Exaggerated Valuesat one end,Straightforward Perceptionat the other. This is the same instrument, unmodified — not a simplified public version of it.
The natural target of on-demand coaching's reset — rework — retry pattern. A values check ("what suddenly became important to me a minute ago that wasn't important before?") is a live diagnostic question, not a retrospective one.
